Spain | Assessing the impact of extreme climate events: Evidence from the Valencia Floods

This note proposes a framework to estimate the employment effects of floods in Spain, combining imputed damage data with a spatial panel model. These extreme events cause job losses and regional spillovers, but timely aid mitigates them. The DANA in Valencia illustrates the frameworks' accuracy and its policy relevance.

Spain | February's labor market records were notable

4 March 2025

Social Security affiliation increased by 100,300 people and unemployment fell by 6,000. After seasonal adjustment, it is estimated that the number of contributors grew by 59,000 and the number of unemployed fell by 23,000. The percentage of affiliates with temporary contracts fell.

Spain | Positive Start for the Labor Market in January 2024

The affiliation saw a decrease of 231,200, while the number of unemployed rose by 60,400 due to seasonal patterns. Once this factor is adjusted, affiliations are estimated to have increased by 39,000, and unemployment fell for the third consecutive month (-15,000). Temporary employment increased 2.1pp, reaching 57.1% SWDA.

The Spanish Labor Market: Reform Achievements and Challenges

We analyse the main characteristics of the Spanish labour market, its performance during the crisis, the macroeconomic effects of the reforms since 2012, and its challenges during the current recovery. High levels of unemployment, temporary employment and inequality call for further measures to achieve a more efficient, equitable and inclusive labour market.
