Mariana Torán is a Senior Economist in the Banking team in Mexico. Her main functions focus on the analysis of the Mexican banking system, including conjuncture and long-term analysis on the evolution of credit and savings, as well as the forecasts of the banking variables.


Mariana Torán worked as Deputy Director of Supervision at the National Retirement Savings System Commission (CONSAR), and as Director of Industrial Banking and Commerce in the Development Banking Unit at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). She also worked as Associate Director in the Public Finance group of Standard & Poor's Rating Services and as Head of Office in the General Directorate of Economic Research at Banco de Mexico.


She obtained a BA in Economics from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), a Master’s in Economics from the University of Michigan and a Diploma in Dynamic Econometric Models (ITAM).

In February 2024, the balance of traditional bank deposits (sight + term) registered a real annual growth rate of 5.8%, while the balance of the current credit portfolio granted by commercial banks to the non-financial private sector (NFPS) recorded a real annual growth of 5.1%.
In January 2024, the balance of traditional bank deposits (sight + term) registered a real annual growth rate of 4.3%, while the balance of the current credit portfolio granted by commercial banks to the non-financial private sector grew 4.9% annually in real terms.
The Banking System maintains capital and liquidity levels much higher than regulatory minima. The dynamism of bank financing in 2023 was observed in all sectors (public and private), through various instruments (credit and securities) and was accompanied by higher credit provisions.
