Mexico | ENIF 2021: Financial inclusion declines and gender gap reaches 13.8pp

On May 11, 2022, the results and databases of the National Survey of Financial Inclusion 2021 were published. This report has the objective of analyzing the advances or setbacks in some indicators of the financial inclusion of the population in Mexico between 2018 and 2021.

Financial Inclusion: No Significant Progress

At the end of last month, the results of the third Mexican National Survey for Financial Inclusion—one of the most comprehensive financial inclusion surveys in the world—were released by the Mexican Office for the Treasury and Public Credit, the Mexican National Banking and Securities Commission and INEGI (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía — Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography).

Mexico | ENIF 2018: 63.2% of Mexicans use informal savings, 70.2% use informal credit

The main results of ENIF 2018 (the National Survey on Financial Inclusion 2018) are being presented, and the situation and challenges that the government of AMLO and the financial institutions will face with regards to inclusion and financial education. 47.1% of the population has a bank or financial account (savings), 31.1% credit or credit card and 25.4% insurance.

Do remittances foster financial inclusion in Mexico?

With data from the National Financial Inclusion Survey (ENIF 2012), we estimate Probit models controlling by different variables. After estimating marginal effects at the means (MEMS), we found that households receiving remittances are more likely to have bank accounts (+10.2% to +11.3%) and to use bank branches (+11.0% to +18.8%), but are less likely to have insurance (-7.6% to -12.1%) and to use ATMs (-8.1% to -8.6%). We did not find any effects on having: i) a payroll account or other investments, ii) investment funds, iii) a loan or credit, iv) credit card, or v) mortgage loans. Thus, there are big opportunities to foster financial inclusion on remittance recipients
