Mexico | Stagnation of Mexican competitiveness in the US market of imports

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Even though Mexico won 0.7 percentage points of share in that market in 2019, the temporary gain reversed in 2020 and 2021 with losses of 0.7 and 0.2 percentage points, respectively
  • The countries with the biggest gains in the US market of manufactured imports were Vietnam, Taiwan and Switzerland with 1.9, 1.0 and 0.6 additional percentage points between 2018 and 2021, respectively
  • The market share gain of Switzerland was mainly due to exports of precious metals like gold, which went through a significant revaluation in 2020
  • Vietnam and Taiwan were able to keep increasing their market share in 2020 and 2021 by becoming alternatives of manufacturing production out of China
