Spain | Long series of regional economic and demographic aggregates, until 2021

This Working Paper briefly describes the latest update of RegData, a database that collects the main economic and demographic aggregates of Spanish regions over the last six decades. For the most part, the series start in 1950 or 1955 and extend until 2021.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • In recent years, the information provided by RegData coincides with the latest official series published by INE. These series are linked to previous official series and to other sources in order to obtain homogeneous linked series that extend back as far as possible.
  • RegData's core module contains data on income, prices, employment and unemployment and labor income. GDP and GVA data are included at current and constant prices from 2016 and at average prices for the period of 1955-2021. Total and salaried employment is measured in people, jobs, hours and full-time equivalent jobs.
  • The last two variables begin in 1977 and 1981, respectively, due to the lack of information necessary to construct them in previous years.
  • Data on employee compensation and average wages are provided, as well as a series of total labor incomes that are estimated by attributing to each non-salaried worker a wage income equal to the average remuneration received by employees in the same region and sector.
  • For the years 2020 and 2021, the monthly average of the number of employees affected by temporary layoff plans (ERTEs),1 as well as actual employment, are also included.
