Mexico | What do remittances from Minnesota and the Depp v. Heard trial have in common?

Why was the Depp v. Heard trial held in Virginia? Both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are not residents of the state of Virginia, they do not have their tax domiciles, companies or homes in the entity and they did not spend part of their marriage in that state.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Between 2020 and 2023, the flow of remittances to Mexico from Minnesota drew attention in the statistics, which in 2022 totaled more than 4.7 billion dollars. It became the third state of origin of remittances to the country, being a state with a small Mexican migrant population. This led to speculation and suspicion about a possible mafia that recruited people in Minnesota to send remittances to Mexico.
  • Nothing is further from reality. It was identified that there were institutions that did not have information on the state of origin of remittances from the United States, so they assigned the location of the electronic servers that store the data. With this adjustment of the information, Minnesota moved to 17th position with a flow of only $646 million in 2023.
