Mexico | Towards COP26 (Glasgow) ...

Summary

COP26 will be held in the city of Glasgow, United Kingdom, from October 31 to November 12, 2021. The two possible major topics will be: 1) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, and 2) Transition and promotion of cleaner and renewable energy sources.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • The COP is the most important official event within the framework of the United Nations where member countries seek to implement and accelerate actions to combat climate change
  • Each country that is a signatory to the Paris Agreement presented its update in 2020 of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which integrates the efforts it will make to meet the global objective of reducing GHG emissions to a level consistent with not increasing the temperature of the planet above 2°C.
  • It is estimated that Mexico emitted 804 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMtCO2e) of GHG in 2020, which represented about 1.3% of global emissions.
  • In its NDC, Mexico committed to reducing GHG emissions by 22% by 2030 in the unconditional case and by 36% in the conditioned case.
