Peru | Tracking consumption with real-time data in January 2023

Summary

BBVA Research's big data consumption index for Peru (inflation-adjusted spending with cards and cash withdrawals) slowed down in January to 3.0% (December: 3.8%).

  • In January, card purchases grew 17% YoY, improving their share of total spending. Within card purchases, the online channel again showed strong growth (29% YoY).
  • By category, expenditures on Health had a YoY decline (in January 2022, Peru was going through the third wave of Covid-19 infections), while those related to Food and Transportation slowed their pace of expansion.
  • Compared to the previous year, the importance of Health and Household Goods spending decreased, but Entertainment, Restaurants and Tourism grew.
