Mexico | Poverty vs. Hunger

Summary

This report presents information on the relationship between hunger—understood as the total or partial difficulty in obtaining food due to a lack of money or resources—and the population in (or not) experiencing multidimensional poverty in Mexico.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Between 2018 and 2024, progress can be observed in reducing food insecurity due to lack of money or resources among Mexican households. Overall, the proportion of households that faced at least one difficulty decreased from 46.6% (16.0 million) to 33.1% (12.9 million), representing a drop of more than 13 percentage points. This change suggests an improvement in conditions of access to food, possibly linked to better average economic performance among households.
  • Regarding food-related difficulties, in 2024, 56.8% of the population living in multidimensional poverty and 27.3% of the population not living in poverty reported that, in the past three months, their household had faced at least one difficulty in meeting food needs due to a lack of money or resources.
  • When considering adult-related metrics on experiencing hunger within the household, in 2024, although progress has been made, challenges persist. In 9.6% of households, at least one person reported feeling hungry but being unable to eat, and in 6.9%, an adult ate only once a day or went an entire day without eating — both situations resulting from a lack of money or resources.
  • Among the population living in households with minors, in 2024, 22.7% of the population living in poverty reported that, due to a lack of money or resources, a minor skipped meals, either partially or completely, while this occurred in 7.6% of the population not living in poverty.
