According to BBVA credit card spending data, tourist spending made by Spaniards remained 4% above the 2019 records in December (5% in November and 77% y / y). If spending by Spaniards abroad is excluded, the advance stood at 11% (14% in November and 71% in y / y).

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Spending exceeded 2019 levels by 10% in the first three weeks of December, thanks to the effect of the Constitution holiday.
  • However, after the increase in the Covid incidence due to the new variant, tourist consumption was, in the last week of the month, around 10% lower than two years ago.
  • The holidays drove the increase in spending in a generalized way at the beginning of December, but the increase in the subsequent incidence deteriorated consumption at the end of the month, except in the Balearic Islands.
