Mexico | The Latino vote account for 14% of voters in the next US elections

Remittances add up to a streak of 29 consecutive months of growth, which began in May 2020. Latinos constitute up to 34.3 million voters in the US, 14.0% of the voter registry in the elections on November 8, surpassing the self-identified population as only African American, Asian, and Native American.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • In September, 5,031 million US dollars (md) entered Mexico through remittances (+14.1%), with which they accumulate 29 consecutive months on the rise.
  • The strong growth of remittances to Chiapas stands out: between 2020 and 2021 they grew 65.7%, and in the first 9 months of 2022 they have increased 67.1%. It is possible that the flow of remittances received by migrants for their transit through Mexico explains part of this growth.
  • Next Tuesday, November 8, the "intermediate elections" will be held in the United States: all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 in the Senate will be elected.
  • Hispanics or Latinos constitute up to 34.3 million voters in the US, 14.0% of the voters in the upcoming elections, surpassing the self-identified population as only African American, Asian and Native American.
  • If President Biden does not obtain a better composition of Congress in the next elections, it is very likely that in the next two years the issue of immigration reform will remain stagnant.
