Spain | Analysis of National Tourist Flows in Real Time in Oct-21

According to BBVA's credit card spending data, foreign tourist spending was above the 2019 records for the first time since the start of the pandemic. This, added to the positive effect of domestic tourism, led to a 17% growth in total spending in the sector compared to Oct-19.

  • Tourist spending by Spaniards rebounded in October, thanks to the effect of the Pilar bridge. The increase in the month was 21% compared to 2019 levels (11% in September and 61% in y / y). If spending by Spaniards abroad is excluded, the advance stood at 33% (60% y / y vs. 21% in September).
  • However, so far in 2021 the accumulated fall is still 10% compared to 2019 (-13% with data up to September).
  • The effect of the October 12 holiday was noticed in all the Autonomous Communities. Cantabria, La Rioja, Asturias, Andalusia and Aragon were the regions that accelerated the most during the week of the bridge compared to the levels of the beginning of the month.
  • In October, an acceleration in spending was noticed in all the Autonomous Communities of origin of the travelers, with the exception of Cantabria. In addition, for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the islands were above the levels of two years ago.
