Spain | Spending in Andalusia rebounds after heavy rains, but tourism remains affected

Summary

In the second week of February, in-person spending in the affected Andalusian provinces almost fully reversed the negative impact of heavy rainfall and flooding. However, tourism-related spending, both foreign and interprovincial, continues to show weakness due to the ongoing railway disruption with Madrid.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Domestic card spending grew by 6.2% year-on-year, improving by 12.4 pp from the previous week and posting a +1.2 pp differential versus the rest of Spain.
  • Foreign card spending narrowed its decline to -0.6% year-on-year, although it still shows a negative differential compared with the rest of the country (-3.5 pp).
  • Domestic tourism (interprovincial spending) remained negative at -5.4% year-on-year, though significantly improved from the previous week.
  • Madrid–Andalusia flows remain the most affected: spending by Madrid residents in the impacted provinces fell by 13.1% year-on-year.
  • At the sectoral level, the recovery was broad-based, but tourism-related activities such as travel, leisure, restaurants, accommodation and transport continue to show relatively weaker performance.
