BBVA-DiGiX: A digitization tracking for the Spanish regions

The Digitization Index (DiGiX) assesses the infrastructure, the level of adoption, and the institutional and market conditions that allow a country or region to take full advantage of information and communication technologies. It includes 17 Spanish regions and 99 countries, with comparable information available for 2019.

  • For 2019, according to DiGiX, Madrid becomes the most digitized Autonomous Community, followed by Catalonia, which led the ranking in 2018
  • The average DiGiX score for the EU-28 countries and the 17 Spanish regions is 0.66, which means that the distance to the digital frontier is 0.34. There is a room for improvement for the Spanish regions in their digital transformation as well as for a large part of the EU-28 countries
  • The high degree of interaction between consumers and firms and the public administration is particularly noteworthy in the Spanish regions. 13 regions are in the top 30
  • The digitization of consumers includes Internet use, digital skills of the population as well as the technology for connection and devices. In Madrid, Catalonia and Navarre are the most digitalized consumers
  • The digitization of firms in the Spanish regions shows a high degree of heterogeneity. Firms in Madrid are the most digitalized (16th) followed by Catalan firms (24th). At a long distance, they are followed by Valencian firms (36th)
