Colombia | Good labor market performance through June

Summary

The unemployment rate has declined throughout 2025, reaching 8.6% in June, equivalent to 8.9% after seasonal adjustment. This reduction has been supported by strong employment growth, mainly in smaller urban areas and rural regions, and largely driven by informal jobs.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • The unemployment rate has decreased throughout 2025, reaching 8.6% in June, equivalent to 8.9% after seasonal adjustment. The seasonally adjusted series has remained around these levels for the past four months.
  • In June, total employment reached 23.7 million, consolidating the high levels of occupation observed this year, following strong job creation between June 2024 and March 2025.
  • The boost in employment during the year came mainly from smaller urban areas and rural zones, where jobs tend to be more informal. This drove informal employment in the first half of the year. Informality, measured as the share of non-salaried workers in total employment, stood at 52.3%.
  • The sectors that contributed most to annual job creation in the first half of 2025 were retail, hospitality and public administration, health, and education, jointly accounting for around 50% of the 842,000 jobs created. In June, industry and public administration, health, and education were the main drivers, contributing nearly 70% of the jobs created this year.
