Mexico | Baby Boomers retirement migrants

After a long working life, in the collective imaginary is to retire with dignity and move to a quiet place and with good weather: sun, sea, beach, etc. Not everyone will achieve this idyllic dream, but there are a group of people who are doing it: the Baby Boomer retirement migrants.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Based on Census 2020 data it is estimated that in Mexico there are more than 35 thousand retirement migrants (retirees or pensioners).
  • Because of their geographical proximity, more than half of these come from the United States, and others migrate from countries such as Spain, Canada, Italy, and France.
  • Reside in a country with a lower cost of living, destinations with sunny weather and in quieter and more natural communities, and live close to the sea or a lake are some of the reasons that drive retirement migration.
  • In Mexico, seven main destinations preferred by the Baby Boomers are identified for retirement migration: 1) Tijuana - Rosarito - Ensenada, 2) Chapala - Jocotepec, 3) Cancun - Riviera Maya, 4) Mérida - Progreso, 5) San Miguel de Allende, 6) Puerto Vallarta - Bahía de Banderas, and 7) La Paz - Los Cabos.
  • The world market for the attraction of retirement migration is constantly growing. Mexico cannot lag and should take advantage of its geographical proximity to the United States and Canada to become the preferred country for this migration.
