Mexico | PISA 2025: chronicle of an expected result

Despite poverty reduction in Mexico (2018-2024), PISA 2025 results reveal an educational stagnation. Seven out of ten students fail to reach the minimum level in mathematics, and the gap between socioeconomic strata persists, highlighting a structural problem in the quality of education.

  • In 2025, 83.7% of students in the lowest socioeconomic quartile did not reach the minimum competency level in mathematics, a deterioration from 71.7% in 2015.
  • In the highest socioeconomic quartile, the percentage of students not reaching the minimum level in mathematics increased from 40.7% in 2015 to 51.2% in 2025.
  • The gap in mathematics results between the lowest and highest quartiles remained almost unchanged, moving from 31.0 percentage points in 2015 to 32.5 in 2025.
