Big Data techniques used

Peru | Tracking consumption with real-time data in June 2022

Summary

In June, BBVA Research's big data consumption index (inflation-adjusted spending with cards and cash withdrawals) increased 13,2% compared to the same month in the previous year (7.8% YoY in May).

Key points

  • Key points:
  • According to the indicator, private consumption in the second quarter of the year maintained a YoY growth rate similar to that of the first quarter. Private consumption was supported by the elimination of restrictions on business gauges, the improvement in the real payroll of formal employment (the number of jobs and wage income grew), and by the release of private savings funds (AFPs and CTS) which occurred in 2021.
  • By category, spending on goods related to food, health, and furniture moderated its growth; spending on goods related to education, fashion and beauty, and entertainment accelerated its expansion; and spending on lodging moderated, while those related to travel and restaurants continued to show strength.
  • Within total spending, card purchases accounted for 39%, while cash withdrawals represented 61%. Within card purchases, the use of the online channel maintained a share of 44% (20% in 2019).
