Spain | Working hours and type of contract

The severe economic consequences of the pandemic and the implementation of furlough schemes have highlighted the important role that working hours can play when adjusting the labor market to the current climate.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • BBVA Research, relying on data from the Spanish Labor Force Survey (EPA), has conducted a study into the relationship between the hours actually worked per week by a salaried individual and their type of contract in Spain.
  • Hours worked fell by 5.3% between 2007 and 2022, from 38.6 to 36.8 hours per week, with the decline being more pronounced for temporary employees than for permanent employees.
  • Employees on a discontinuous or seasonal fixed contract worked 11% fewer hours per week than regular permanent employees (33.1 and 37.2 hours, respectively).
  • Part-time contracts made a sizeable contribution to this difference in working hours.
  • The additional job protection granted to temporary contracts under the labor reform does not seem to have affected the impact of the type of contract on working hours.
