    Big Data techniques used

Colombia | BBVA Big Data Consumption Tracker. 27 Jan, 2022

    Summary

Consumption has grown 35.6% so far this month compared to pre-pandemic levels (vs. the same period in 2019) and 40.4% in annual terms (vs. the same period in 2021), higher than in December when consumption grew 20.0% vs. 2019.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Drugstore spending leads consumption so far in January growing 72.1% versus 2019, which may be associated with the recent increase in less lethal Covid-19 cases in the country and their less specialized treatment.
    • Entertainment spending in December grew 21.5% versus 2019 and exceeded, for the first time, its pre-pandemic levels since March 2020. With the end of the vacations, a sharp drop is observed, again placing it 25.6% below its pre-pandemic levels.
    • With the end of the vacations, spending in hotels and restaurants moderated, with lower growth than in Nov-Dec 2021.
    • Consumption accelerates so far in January in large cities compared to 2019. Pereira and Bucaramanga show the best dynamics.
