Peru | Retail Outlook 2019

We estimate that retail sales' growth rate in 2020 will be similar to that of this year. Looking forward, factors such as the demographic boon, higher household purchasing power and the continued growth of online shopping, suggest that retail sales have space to continue growing.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • We estimate that retail sales in 2020 will grow around 4% consistent with our macroeconomic scenario, particularly the deceleration of domestic demand
  • How are customers characterized? Their lifestyle is changing given a more urban population with higher levels of anxiety and connectedness
  • New formats are being developed according to consumer requirements. Amongst these, we find those that facilitate the acquisition of foodstuffs outside the house, and a trend towards healthier products
  • We also underline an expansion of the discount and convenience store formats. Furthermore, electronic commerce is growing in line with greater connectivity and use of digital banking
