Spain | How are your digital skills?

In 2015, 54% of the population had basic or advanced digital skills in Spain, compared to 57% in the EMU. Four years later, the figure reached 57%, one percentage point less than in the wider EMU. From 2019 to 2020, the figure in Spain rose to 60%—still far behind the 80% target set by the 2025 Digital Agenda.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • A recent study by BBVA Research analyzes how to use digitalization as a lever that will help to emerge with renewed strength from the pandemic and reinforce social welfare over the long term in Spain.
  • Improving digital skills has a positive impact on the economy, the labor market and financial services, and enhances all areas of society, from education and public services to security and political engagement.
  • First, we measured the digital skills of the population in each of the four dimensions defined by Eurostat and the OECD: information search and management, communication in digital environments, digital problem solving, and software use.
  • Then we identified the traits of the individual and his or her household that influence adoption of digital skills. Personal variables, such as age, job status, Internet use frequency and educational attainment help explain differences in digital skills.
  • Based on our findings, we put forward policy recommendations on the supply and demand side that can be implemented by leveraging the resources of the Next Generation EU Plan: €3.6 billion is allocated to boost training and digital inclusion.
