DiGiX: Digital transformation index for the Spanish Regions as a starting point for NGEU

The update of the digitization index for 2020, presents a baseline for economic policy makers in charge of designing digital transformation plans for the economy, within the NGEU framework. It indicates innovation and productivity aspects to be promoted as well as the ones that are lagging behind to be supported.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Three Autonomous Communities are above the level of digitization that characterizes Spain as a whole, the Community of Madrid, Catalonia and the Community of Valencia. These regions have been setting this trend for the last 3 years.
  • The seventeen Autonomous Communities already have almost massive coverage of digital infrastructures able to take advantage of technological advances in a productive manner, which allow them to go beyond simple Internet access.
  • In terms of adoption by consumers (including internet use, type of connection and digital skills), the C. of Madrid, Catalonia, C. of Valencia, Navarre, and the Basque Country are the five Autonomous Communities where the adoption rate exceeds that of the average Spanish consumer.
  • The adoption of companies is where there is most room for improvement. It measures digital adoptions that generate clear improvements in productivity (use of the cloud and big data). The Community of Madrid stands out, followed at a great distance by the Catalan and Valencian businesses.
  • In the adoption of digital services provided by regional governments, the governments of La Rioja and the Canary Islands stand out, offering digital services above Spain as a whole. It is interesting given their worse levels in the other indicators.
